Nurse stabbed by ER patient at MA hospital

They say O'Regan went to the hospital emergency room Wednesday and attacked Wilson while he was alone with her in an examination room. He went through the hospital registration process and as he was being taken to get medical care, he allegedly attacked a nurse at random, stabbing her.

Authorities say the nurse was airlifted to UMass Medical Center.

"I'd like to thank emergency room personnel, specifically the nurses and doctors, for their quick response, and [for] the way that they reacted to the scene to help save the victim's life, a job that was made even more hard under the added stress of the fact that they were working on their friend", said Early.

The hospital said patient admissions to the emergency department was being restricted while authorities investigated the incident.

Police said a hospital nurse was seriously injured by a patient with a knife, who then fled after the attack.

Wilson has been a licensed nurse since 1970 and renewed her license last fall, according to a state Health and Human Services online database.

O'Regan's manager at the McDonald's where he works says he appeared to be going downhill.

In court on Thursday, a clinical psychiatrist said that suspect Conor O'Regan, 24, is schizophrenic and says he is getting messages from radio and television.

O'Regan is behind bars, awaiting a "dangerousness hearing" to determine whether he'll be a threat to society if he's released.

He is facing assault charges in connection with the stabbing and was arraigned Thursday in Worcester Central District Court. There is a very small group of people that we will never be able to repay or express enough thanks and gratitude to.

Wilson's family said all the right people were at the hospital at the right time to treat her.

O'Regan was reportedly able to corner the nurse in a small room before stabbing her.
