Remy's statement caused an immediate flurry of reaction via social media, and it was not long afterward that NESN and the Red Sox disassociated themselves from what was said.
The 64-year-old addressed the controversial comments at the start of his broadcast on Wednesday night. But when I get out there and I'm on the mound and fighting in the games, I'm going with what I think is my best stuff and what I'm going to be most competitive with. "But once I got to see the replay, I saw it hit his hand".
"Learn baseball language. You know, learn-it's pretty simple", Remy said.
Remy, who is in 30th year of broadcasting with NESN, announced in February of this year that he was being treated for a relapse of lung cancer.
"I had my good pitches and bad pitches, but the ones that went down the middle (of the strike zone) turned into extra-base hits", said Tanaka. On Tuesday, Remy's assumption that Tanaka and others should learn "baseball language" irked some observers.
Major League Baseball has allowed translators to go onto the field in such situations since 2013.
That same season, Red Sox relievers Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa each used translators on the team's run to the World Series championship.

On Tuesday, the Red Sox eked out a 5-4 win.
O'Brien replied, "I would say that probably they're concerned about nuance being lost in some of these conversations".
Farrell said he learned Japanese for single words, objects and numbers.
Girardi asked the umpires for a video review, but said he was told he made the request too late.
Boston continues to struggle against the division-leading Yankees, who have beaten the Red Sox in six of seven meetings, and held their rivals to one or fewer runs in four of the past five. Johnson is 2-0 in a pair of spot starts for the Red Sox this year, and shut out Seattle on May 27.
"The controversial take came on the same day Philadelphia Phillies legend Mike Schmidt appeared on 94WIP SportsRadio in Philadelphia and said the Phillies couldn't build around center fielder Odubel Herrera because of a language barrier", Bleacher Report noted.
Herrera is from Venezuela and conducts his interviews with English-speaking media in Spanish, through a translator.
NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia had just gotten the first out of the fourth inning when he pulled up his right trousers leg, then unstrapped and unscrewed the large black brace that has supported his knee during starts since September 2015.
