Investigators piece together last movements of baseball practice shooter

Wednesday morning, tragedy stuck at a park in Alexandria, Virginia, when a gunman opened fire on a group of congressman practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game.

Authorities say the gunman in Alexandria, Virgina was 66-year-old James Hodgkinson who lived in Belleville, which is a town in southwestern IL off Interstate 64. He injured four people, including Majority House Whip Steve Scalise, before being shot dead by police.

Among the many remaining questions for investigators is whether Hodgkinson - a 66-year-old unemployed home inspector from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois - had long planned Wednesday's assault and possibly studied the movements of lawmakers in the months he spent living in his van in northern Virginia.

Hodgkinson owned a home inspection business in Belleville, Ill., but dissolved the corporation early this year, according to public records. A former mayor of Alexandria says he saw Hodgkinson every morning at the YMCA right next to the field where the shooting took place.

Former Alexandria mayor Bill Euille told MSNBC he had met Hodgkinson nearly daily at the local YMCA, giving him tips on where to eat and find a job.

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

"The 99 per cent are getting pushed around and the one per cent don't give a damn", said Hodgkinson in the 2011 video.

The gunman died in an exchange of fire with Capitol Police and Alexandria police on the scene. Sanders said in a statement that Hodgkinson "apparently' worked as a volunteer for his presidential campaign".

A friend of Hodgkinson's in IL said what happened was totally out of character.

"I didn't like him from the beginning".

"There was no effort to inspire or coerce an agenda or behavior that the shooter would have wanted", he said", This seems to be more of a maybe personal and political individual set of grievances".

Sanders said, "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".

Amid the torrent of expletives, Dauberman recalled Thursday, Hodgkinson's central point was that the president had messed up the country "more than anyone in the history of this country", Dauberman recalled on Thursday. Bernie Sanders, according to the Vermont senator, who condemned the attack. The man calmly asked which partys lawmakers were practicing and Duncan told him they were the Republicans.

"I didn't even know until today that he was a Bernie Sanders person", Euille said. He railed obsessively against the American tax rate and Republican tax policy on Facebook and in letters to the newspaper in his hometown, where he protested as a member of the "99 percent" movement.

Court records show Hodgkinson's legal trouble started in the 1990s.

According to Facebook, Hodgkinson went to Belleville Township High School West and studied flight training at Southwestern Illinois College.
