Congressional Baseball Game tickets selling fast following shooting

United States president Donald Trump has visited critically-ill party whip Steve Scalise, who was shot by a rifle-wielding attacker as he practised for a charity baseball game.

The attack critically wounded House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and also injured Capitol police officers, and a current and former congressional aide.

The gunman, later identified as 66-year-old IL man James T. Hodgkinson, died from gunshot wounds at the hospital after a gun battle with police at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park Field, where dozens of GOP lawmakers were holding their final practice before an annual charity game against Democrats.

She noted that she has received numerous threats herself over the years, and is now the target of millions of dollars in negative ads in a House district in Georgia where a hard-fought special election will take place next week.

The shooter, James Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old of Belleville, Illinois, died following a shootout with authorities, federal law enforcement officials said.

The US president offered the assessment as a shaken US House returned into session a day after the shooting of Mr Scalise and others. My thoughts and prayers go out to the members of Congress and their families, Capitol Police officers and staffers present at the shooting.

The charity ballgame, played off and on since 1909, pits Democrats against Republicans in a friendly rivalry. Members of Congress were practicing for a game when a gunman started shoot.

"You know, it shouldn't take an incident like this to bring us together", Doyle said.

Mr. Scalise, the Republican chief whip, was at a practice session for the annual baseball match between Republican and Democratic lawmakers scheduled for Thursday to raise money for charities.

Rep. Roger Williams, a Texas Republican whom Barth works for, was also hospitalized and released with an injury to his leg.

One post, written on March 22, read: "Trump is Traitor".

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., acknowledged the issue had been raised but said it has not been settled. Mika's family said the lobbyist was shot multiple times and was in critical condition following surgery.

"There was a real fear" that the gunman would come into the dugout where members of Congress and others would have been "sitting ducks", he said.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at that time", Mr Trump said.

Scalise was felled by a bullet to the hip as he fielded grounders at second base, witnesses said.

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting. Asked whether more of his colleagues should receive security protection like him, he quipped, "I think all of you deserve protection, too", before adding later: "I think we have to protect everybody". The man thanked him. One lawmaker said the baseball team members would have been sitting ducks had the gunman been able to make it onto the field. Perhaps none was more thoughtful than that of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who was shot and almost killed at a constituent event in 2011 (six people died in that attack). The last time a lawmaker was shot was when Democratic Rep.

Following the Giffords shooting, lawmakers have held fewer open town halls and have been advised to increase security at such events.
