In another part of the serial documentary "Putin", by the US moviemaker Oliver Stone, the Russian president pointed out that NATO's activity near the borders of his country is a strategic error.
In the second part of Oliver Stone's Showtime series "The Putin Interviews" aired on Tuesday night, the Russian president called NATO's activities at Russia's doorstep hostile and a major security challenge, adding that Moscow would not stand idly by.
Stone was granted unprecedented access to both Putin's professional and personal worlds, and interviewed the Russian leader more than a dozen times over the course of two years, most recently in February following the USA presidential elections.
He said Russian Federation faced two threats, one of which was the deployment of ballistic anti-missiles in Eastern European countries in the vicinity of Russia's borders.
"Well, nearly nothing", Putin continued in response to Stone's question about what changes come with each new United States president.
Putin noted that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation shows no signs of slowing down, with plans to install missile defense launch pads on warships deployed to seas bordering Russian Federation, and in Alaska. And we will preserve this so-called strategic balance. In an earlier part of the interview Putin remarked that this is indeed how Russian Federation will view countries that, in his view, are coerced as "vassals" of the U.S.to host this technology.
The president described the comments published in the magazine Foreign Affairs about the fall of the Russian leadership as a delirium, and noted that they were made by people with a short vision of the future. During the Stone documentary series, Putin reiterated the philosophy of his Soviet predecessor Mikhail Gorbachev who said it should be mandatory that Eastern Europe-Moscow's former sphere of influence-should remain non-aligned.
