US Rep. Trey Hollingsworth calls congressional baseball shooting 'cowardly acts of violence'

"Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", says Sanders.

A House Democratic aide said it was his understanding that Bailey was not shot, but had twisted his ankle during the attack.

Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said several other people also were hit, including two law enforcement officers.

He and other GOP members were at the baseball field practicing for the annual bipartisan congressional game, which has been a tradition since 1909 and raises money for charity, scheduled to take place at Nationals Park on Thursday night.

President Donald Trump revealed he had died in an afternoon news conference.

Cutting across party lines, members of the bitterly divided US Congress today showed a rare unity as lawmakers and the nation grappled with the shooting at Congressmen at a baseball practicing session in a Washington suburb.

The gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson III, a 66-year-old white male from IL, opened a barrage of gunfire at a congressional baseball practice field in Alexandria, Virginia. Both serve as part of Scalise's security detail and were in good condition, according to U.S. Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa.

Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana was among those escaping the gunfire and was shot in the hip. In the field, I see Rep. Scalise is shot but moving, and he's trying to drag himself through the dirt and out into the outfield. He was in critical condition but the wound was not life-threatening, officials said. Speaking at the White House, Trump said Scalise was "badly injured" but in stable condition and would recover.

Five people, including the suspected shooter, were hit.

Davis, who was at bat at the time of the shooting, said he hopes Wednesday marks a turning point in how lawmakers engage in the future.

"We are united", Ryan said.

The annual Congressional baseball game will go on as planned Thursday night at Nationals Park in the USA capital.

Barton told reporters Wednesday that the gunman first fired shots at Mississippi Republican congressman Trent Kelly and missed before shooting Scalise.

Congressional staff member Zach Barth and the Tyson Food Director of Government Relations Matt Mika were also injured in the shooting.
