Sanders condemns shooter who 'apparently' volunteered on campaign

The shooter who was killed during gunfire at a practice for a congressional baseball game Wednesday morning belonged to a number of anti-Republican groups, including one called "Terminate the Republican Party".

Authorities identified the gunman as James Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from the St Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois. Sanders also wished a "quick and full recovery" for Representative Scalise, his staff, and the capitol police officers wounded in the shooting.

Hodgkinson owned a home inspection business in Belleville, Ill., but dissolved the corporation early this year, according to public records.

St. Clair County Sheriff's Office in IL has been contacted for information about Hodgkinson by authorities investigating the shooting in Alexandria, an official with the sheriff's office told ABC News. Law enforcement is seeking information about Hodgkinson's time in the Washington, DC, suburb as well as his life in IL.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is now conducting urgent traces on two firearms - a rifle and a handgun - from the scene.

Hodgkinson died in the hospital of multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, Slater said, citing the DC medical examiner's office. Another Facebook status posted on March 22 says Trump is a traitor and destroys the democracy. He said he was part of a "99 percent" team drawing attention to the amount of money and political power the top 1 percent of Americans acquired.

Hodgkinson had a "direct line of sight at the entrance", and the lawmakers "couldn't get up and run because the moment you did, you were shot at", Bishop said, noting there was only one way onto the field, near first base. The shooting came as a shock to him.

"She said that he went on a trip. She wasn't real specific", Meurer said.

Meurer said he occasionally cut his neighbor's grass to help out. "I am sickened by this despicable act", he said on the floor.

"He seemed like he was semi-retired; he was home a lot".

President Obama defended doing so after Newtown: "Are we really prepared to say that we're powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard?"

Hodgkinson, a former Bernie Sanders presidential campaign volunteer, posted a cartoon in January 2015 about Rep. Steve Scalise saying, "Here's a Republican that should Lose His Job, but they Gave Him a Raise".

"We were neighbors, but we didn't talk every day".

Separately, Hodgkinson had an extensive history of traffic violations and petty offenses in St. Clair County, Illinois, spanning from 1989 to 2011, according to online county court records.

However, Hodgkinson had been banned from the department, Beach said.

"There were enough employees that were still there that remembered him".

Hodgkinson called police to report that unknown persons had drove through his yard, leaving tire tracks.

"Even though this platform has allowed us a very different way to communicate, it also has its pitfalls, its nuances and its problems that we're starting to discover", Social Media consultant Tiffany Starnes said.
