The new online ballots will also give eligible voters the option to listen to the songs that have been nominated, as a way of encouraging voters to actually listen to the artists they're voting for, BuzzFeed News reports. "You are our light", Adele said from the Grammy stage.
The Grammy's have been under fire the last few years. Thus far, the major changes include the introduction of online voting for its 13,000 members, a number of changes for the top album of the year, and the introduction of nomination review committees for the genres of rap, contemporary instrumental, and New Age genres. The Academy experts expect that younger voters, as well as touring musicians, will be most affected by the switch, allowing them to participate even if they are on the road during the voting period. "We're doing everything we can to make the process as seamless and as fair and have as much integrity as possible". Previously, songwriters were not recognized in this category.
The Grammys already have nominations review committees for 15 awards fields. From now on, all music creators - including songwriters, producers, engineers, mixers, mastering engineers and featured artists - will be eligible for a Grammy in the category if they're credited with at least 33 percent playing time on the winning album. "But after I let it sink in, I thought, 'Wow, why didn't we think of this before?' Songwriters are really significant contributors and they should not be overlooked".
There were also changes in the music categories as well.
Perhaps the most crucial amendment is the creation of new review committees, particularly in the rap field. It remains to be seen if these committees help or hurt deserving artists that have been neglected in the voting process.
Regarding the nominations themselves, the rules for Album of the Year have been altered for the 60th iteration. Entries for song written for visual media will be allowed if a different version was created for a film of a song submitted in other categories.
Some of the changes will result in the distribution of more Grammys, but Freimuth insists that the Recording Academy is sensitive to keeping its annual ceremony from turning into a more-the-merrier affair. The 60th Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on January 28th, 2018 in New York City.
The 2018 Grammy Awards will recognize recordings released between October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017.
