Queen offers prayers for families and tribute to rescuers at Grenfell Tower

At least 12 people have died and police expect the death toll to rise further after a blaze swept through the 24-storey apartment block in central London.

As smoke continued to billow from the charred building, survivors voiced anger over longstanding safety fears at the Grenfell Tower, which was home to between 600 and 800 people.

Many were also anxious about the addition of the new cladding on the building's exterior, which, again, will likely be investigated for helping spread the fire.

Flames tore through the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in North Kensington overnight, leaving people trapped on upper floors - some holding babies out of windows and others jumping from their flats, says The Herald. I've seen a couple of friends almost in tears in other garages round here.

"Food and drink free of charge so just go and speak to my manager Juan and we will sort you out and give you some love. this is for victims of the fire our thoughts, love and prayers are with you all".

"I've never seen a fire like that in my life", said Joe Ruane, the former deputy chief fire officer for U.S. Air Force bases in Britain.

She said there are still "unknown numbers" of people in the building.

Some residents said they hadn't heard the fire alarms and it was only when fellow residents, Muslims among them, alerted them that they could quickly evacuate the burning building, The Independent reported.

"Adele is such a wonderful person for going to Grenfell Tower".

The younger royals said they hope by donating others will be encouraged to do the same.

The fire brigade said 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters had been called to the blaze in Grenfell Tower, which has 120 flats.

The inferno broke out at Grenfell Tower, home to hundreds of residents in the Lancaster West Estate shortly before 1am on Wednesday morning.

"In due course, when the scene is secure, when it's possible to identify the cause of this fire, then of course there will be proper investigation and if there are any lessons to be learnt they will be, and action will be taken".

The government department in charge of regulating building work - the Department for Communities and Local Government - did not respond to Reuters' questions, including whether such fire barriers were required by law.

The tower block, more than 40 years old, had been given a facelift costing more than 10 million USA dollars just a year ago.

"It is our conviction that a serious fire in a tower block or similar high density residential property is the most likely reason that those who wield power at the KCTMO will be found out and brought to justice!" a residents organization, the Grenfell Action Group, wrote in a blog post past year.

The building underwent a 10 million-pound refurbishment as part of a wider transformation of the estate previous year.

Other rest centres at St Clement Church, Treadgold Street and the Rugby Portobello Trust, Walmer Road, were earlier said to be nearing capacity.
