Early Wednesday, before the fight was announced, ABC News reported that major Las Vegas sportsbooks had Mayweather as a -900 favorite, meaning bettors must wager $900 to win $100.
The UFC stripped McGregor of his featherweight belt shortly after that fight when he announced he would be taking some time off after he and long-time partner Dee Devlin had their first baby in May. He also included photos of the two combatants.
Espinoza said the fight came together quickly after McGregor and the UFC reached agreement last month on their end of the deal and Mayweather's team pushed for the fight in recent days.
"We have been in negotiations for a while", White told American sports broadcaster ESPN. "I thought it would be an impossible deal to do, but it was the right fight at the right time and we got it done".
White said the fight would be at 154lbs - light middleweight - telling Fox: "It's going to be 12 rounds, they're going to wear 10oz gloves, 154lbs, a boxing ring, Mayweather Promotions will build the undercard - it's going to be a boxing event".
The boxing format heavily favours the undefeated Mayweather who many consider to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Even if Conor McGregor isn't a pro boxer, and even if Floyd is coming out of retirement at 40 years old for this, everything from here on out is going to be historical, insane and hilarious and everyone knows it.
Despite having little or no boxing experience, White insists his MMA client McGregor is confident of victory.
The fight was first mooted in a series of exchanges on social media, in which McGregor urged Mayweather to step up and sign. He did confirm that both fighters would be more than happy with their earnings.
The event is expected to be a pay-for-view blockbuster, and organizers are hoping it can challenge the 4.6 million pay-per-view buys for Mayweather-Pacquiao. It will be broadcast as pay-per-view on Showtime, with whom Mayweather has a contract.
"This is not a referendum on the sport of boxing", he said. Promoters are hoping the trash-talking McGregor can sell tickets.

McGregor received a California boxing license past year, but is still waiting for his Nevada application to be approved.
