Scalise is majority whip in the House of Representatives, a leadership position that ensures discipline and rallies votes within the party. The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said in a written statement. The other victims have been identified as Zachary Barth - he's a staffer for Texas Congressman Roger Williams - and Matt Mika, a government relations director at Tyson Foods.
Also wounded by the gunman were a Capitol Police officer, a congressional aide and a lobbyist. Two congressman said they had sustained minor injuries while trying to take cover.
The president and First Lady Melania Trump later visited Scalise, bringing flowers. According to the hospital, Mr. Scalise underwent surgery and is now in critical condition. "Pray for Steve!" he wrote on Twitter.
During a press conference authorities from Alexandria and Capitol Police said it was very early on in the investigation and they will not say much about the incident.
He was also a fierce critic of the president on social media.
Nathan told NBC News he knew the GOP congressional baseball team was being targeted because the squad practices at the field "all the time".
Shortly after the shooting, Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said on the Senate floor that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign a year ago.
Sanders said he was "sickened by this despicable act" and denounced any use of violence. Sanders said he denounced the violence "in the strongest possible terms".
Despite the injuries and frightening moments on the Alexandria, Virginia field, the congressional baseball game planned for Thursday will go on as scheduled.
"We've got to get back to... where things aren't so personal and we're so judgemental of each other".
"Everyone on that field is a public servant", Trump said. The attacker was shot and later died.
The shooting took place just after 7:00 am (1100 GMT) as the Republican team practiced for the well-loved charity showdown.
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., attended the practice and said he heard "at least 50 or 60 shots" - and that Scalise was on second base when he was hit.
"I was batting, we heard a loud noise...."
"I got a look at the gunman behind the backstop, and he had a line of sight into our dugout".
US representatives Ron DeSantis and Jeff Duncan had ducked out of baseball practice early on Wednesday when a middle-aged man in the parking lot asked them if the players in red shirts on the field were Republicans or Democrats.
The president went on to say, "He will recover from this assault, and Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation, and frankly, the entire world".
Most shocking of all: It appears this was an attempted political assassination, an effort to kill because the targets were Republicans.
