After rocking the NBA past year with his decision to leave Oklahoma City as a free agent and sign with the Golden State Warriors, Kevin Durant's dream came true Monday when Golden State beat Cleveland 129-120 to win the best-of-seven NBA Finals four games to one.
Golden State, who beat Cleveland in the 2015 finals only to lose to them past year after squandering a 3-1 series lead, set a record in this season's playoffs by losing just one of their 16 games, their only loss coming in Game 4 of the finals.
The first-ever NBA Finals trilogy is over, and the Golden State Warriors are NBA Champions again. Curry added 34 and Andre Iguodala was a force off the bench, scoring 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting. But the statistic most will point to after Cleveland's loss to Golden State is James' 3-5 record record in the Finals.
FOURTH STRAIGHT? Will the Warriors and Cavs face each other again in the NBA Finals for a fourth straight year?
Durant then replied by saying, "I don't think it's fair to minimize what Kevin offers Golden State, and what they offered him, to say that it was the weakest move in National Basketball Association history".
"I'm just excited to do something special", Curry said during the presentation of the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy on Tuesday in Oakland, after his team beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. "No", he added. "But like I've always told myself, if you put in the work and you leave it on the floor, then you can always push forward and not look backwards".
"Everybody for the last 10 years knew how good he was but until you break through and win that first championship there's still something there". He ended the series averaging 33.6 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
"I left everything on the floor every game, so I have no reason to put my head down", said James, who scored a game-high 41 points Monday.
"All the pieces that we have are important to the equation of winning a championship and competing for a championship every single year".
Durant averaged 35.2 points over the five-game series against the Cavaliers.
I predicted that Golden State would beat Cleveland in five games. Maybe LeBron is already looking down the road and thinking he might make one more move before he's through, as a way of giving himself the best chance to win more titles. I have no reason to look back at what I could have done or what I shouldn't have done or what I could have done better for the team. He handled the situation admirably, which is why this team of All-Stars meshed so well together.
