Hodgkinson had rifle, pistol in GOP baseball practice attack

The Illinois man who opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team in Virginia Wednesday lived in a van for three months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

It is too early in this attempt at mass murder to know much about this murderer - now confirmed dead, and identified as James T. Hodgkinson - his mental state or why he chose to do evil.

Scalise is the House Majority Whip, the third ranking Republican leader in the House.

The former army surgeon rushed to Scalise's side Wednesday morning after a gunman opened fire on Republicans at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

In a statement, Mika's family said he was shot multiple times, was in critical condition and was now in surgery.

Brooks stated that between 15 and 25 lawmakers were on the field when the shooting began. Hodgkinson allegedly shot Scalise, along with four other people including two Capitol Police officers, before he was shot.

Law enforcement officials identified him as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, from IL.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", Sanders said in a statement.

President Donald Trump said the alleged gunman had been killed.

Five people were transported medically from the scene in Alexandria, the city's police chief Michael Brown told reporters.

"Authorities are continuing to investigate the crime", said Trump, calling for unity after the shooting.

Katko, R-Camillus, said he was in the House gym when Capitol Police showed up after 7 a.m. with an emergency escort for House Speaker Paul Ryan, who was also in the gym. Later, someone is hurt while expressing concern for one of the shooting victims. He was wounded in a gunfight with Capitol Hill police armed with pistols who were at the scene, lawmakers said.

"Had Steve Scalise missed practice today, there would have been no security detail there", Rep. Coffman said.

Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO), who is also on the Democratic Congressional Baseball team, tweeted - "Deeply saddened and praying for Rep. Scalise & all the others who were shot".
