Game on: Tragedy won't stop annual baseball game

Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail wounded the shooter, who was taken into custody.

The Republican lawmakers and their aides had almost finished batting practice at an Alexandria, Va., park Wednesday when they heard a single crack through the sticky early-morning air. Green said his office got threatening phone calls after he called for President Donald Trump to be impeached.

The 66-year-old gunman was identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, an ardent supporter of left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders - who said he was "sickened" by what he called a "despicable act". We salute them and the law enforcement officials who quickly responded. He was charged in 2006 with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle.

As businessman Trump rose to become the Republican nominee in the 2016 presidential election, his brash style and outspoken views on immigration and other policies led to mass protests, including on the weekend of his inauguration in January. MSNBC TV reported that two Capitol Hill police officers who were shot also appeared to be in stable condition. Many have credited the U.S. Capitol Police for effectively engaging with the gunman, using their pistols against his rifle - a decidedly uneven matchup across a wide open space.

Wednesday's shooting revived debate about gun rights in America. "My thoughts and prayers remain with Majority Whip Scalise and all those injured during today's horrific shooting".

"We are united in our shock, we are united in our anguish". "We are one family", he said.

Scalise represents the First Congressional District of Louisiana covering the Southeast of the state.

Brooks continued: "The only weapon I had was a baseball bat and that's not the kind of fight you want to engage in". Ryan said those injured are expected to recover.

The shooting began around 7 a.m.

The president was accompanied by White House doctor Ronny Jackson.

Within minutes, Alexandria police arrived, their sirens whaling.

The president then tweeted: "Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter".

Scalise underwent surgery and is in critical condition.

"I think for a while, nobody was saying anything, we got up in a huddle said some prayers", Doyle said. Mike Crapo. "I also commend and thank the men and women of the U.S. Capitol Police".

Richmond's dominance has been so pronounced that, in 2014, some Republicans tried to oust their longtime manager, Congressman Joe Barton, of Texas, whom they criticized for giving playing time to any lawmaker who had shown up to practice.

Green, who is black, said the callers called him the N-word and said he should be lynched.

"It took the second shot for me to understand what was happening and hear everybody". When I say risking themselves, I mean, they're shooting 90-100 feet away.

Meanwhile, Loudermilk rushed to Mika, who had been shot multiple times.

U.S. Capitol Police will now conduct a full re-evaluation of how to protect members of Congress outside of the capitol complex after Wednesday's mass shooting in Virginia, according to members who spoke to WFAA. Brooks said that Scalise, 51, was down on the ground with what Brooks described as "a hip wound".

MedStar Washington Hospital Center is also providing a more detailed description of Scalise's wounds. For weeks leading up to the game, they attend regular early-morning practices before heading to their day jobs.
