While Universal struggles to get their "Dark Universe" of monster characters off the ground, Warner Bros. and director/producer James Wan have been quietly building a horror movie universe based around creatures and concepts introduced in The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2.

The character made his debut in last June's Conjuring sequel, shown as an evil entity tormenting a small child in a home full of supernatural occurrences.

Writer Mike Van Waes has been recruited by New Line to pen the script for the movie, which is based on a story by Wan and will be produced by the director and Peter Safran. James Wan took to Twitter to settle the speculation. The character first appeared in The Conjuring 2 during a pretty terrifying sequence involving a zoetrope toy. Taissa Farmiga, Demián Bichir, and Charlotte Hope have all been cast in The Nun, which will focus on a priest being dispatched to investigate the mysterious death of a nun in Rome. A fourth spin-off movie, titled The Crooked Man and based on the creepy villain from the second movie, is now in the works.

The Conjuring is truly becoming a horrifying expanded universe. The first two Conjuring films and the prequel spinoff Annabelle have earned $897 million worldwide to date. Annabelle: Creation will hit theaters August 11. The Conjuring films and Annabelle have already earned a combined $895 million worldwide with a combined budget of just $66.5 million across the three films.
