Congressmen at GOP Baseball Shooting Credit Capitol Police for Preventing 'Massacre'

IN lawmakers are responding after the attack in Virginia which injured five, including Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

The 66-year-old gunman was identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, an ardent supporter of liberal Senator Bernie Sanders - who said he was "sickened" by what he called a "despicable act".

The chief of Capitol Police visited her Wednesday afternoon. "He asked me who was practising this morning, Republicans or Democrats, and I said: 'That's the Republicans practising, '" Duncan told reporters.

Police in the upmarket Washington DC suburb of Alexandria said they were investigating a "multiple shooting" and a suspect was in custody.

Sanders said Hodgkinson volunteered on his presidential campaign and denounced the shooter's actions.

In a city and state where it was once common for even two-bit aldermen to have a bodyguard, I've always found it refreshing that members of Congress don't. A helicopter arrived to medevac at least one victim.

In the wake of the shooting, the House of Representatives canceled legislative business for the day, and security was increased around the White House. A hospital spokeswoman said Scalise, 51, remained in critical condition following his first surgery.

Scalise, the House GOP whip along with a staffer, a lobbyist and two Capital Police officers, were shot at the team practice. While we don't yet know the full scale of the casualties this morning, we do know that this attack would have been inestimably worse without the presence of the fearless men and women of the Capitol Police, some of whom are among the wounded.

Shots rang out for more than four minutes in Nathan's video. He thanked him when he said it was the Republicans.

The couple brought two large bouquets of white flowers for the injured lawmaker's wife, as well as for Crystal Griner, a US Capitol Police officer also wounded in the gun attack.

Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said two law enforcement officers were believed to be among the others shot.

NPR's Scott Detrow reports that a staff member from Rep. Roger Williams' office was wounded.

"Scalise was playing second base, his position, and all of a sudden we heard a loud - what sounded like a gunshot, very loud and very close".

America came awfully close yesterday to experiencing one of the worst mass shootings in our nation's history.

Scalise has forged a close relationship with President Donald Trump, working together on the House health care bill and a pending effort to overhaul the tax code. "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with him".

Rep. Eric Swalwell of California said on Twitter that Thursday's game is still on. The team was practicing for an upcoming charity baseball game.

The violence disrupted what had been a quiet start to the day in Del Ray, hitting an area where many residents go to work out in the mornings and grab a coffee from a shop around the corner from the YMCA. "And it just went from really sort of a calm, peaceful morning to utter chaos in here".
