When the gunfire popped in the northern Virginia baseball diamond Wednesday morning, Senator Jeff Flake took cover in the first base dugout as he watched a congressional colleague bleeding in the field.
House Majority Leader Paul Ryan, R-Wis., encouraged members to pursue unity and thanked his Democrat colleagues for their support. Brooks said that Scalise, 51, was down on the ground with what Brooks described as "a hip wound".
Although authorities at the press conference declined to identify the shooter, the Washington Post identified him as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, citing law enforcement sources. Hodgkinson allegedly shot Scalise, along with four other people including two Capitol Police officers, before he was shot.
Brooks told CNN that during batting practice he heard a "bam" and then a quick succession of shots and saw the gunman shooting through the holes in a chain link fence.
Duncan said that as he left the field the man who would later open fire approached him in the parking lot.
"Thank God", they exclaimed over and over, and said otherwise the shooter would have been able to take a huge deadly toll.
"Congressman Roger Williams is my coach, and he, in trying to protect some of the players and my son - my son and I scrambled into the dugout - he sprained his ankle, and he has had medical attention", Barton said.
President Donald Trump will make a statement from the White House on Wednesday about the shooting of a top House Republican. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress". "Scalise's security detail and Capitol Hill police immediately began to return fire and Alexandria police also immediately came and began to return fire", he said.
