Congress baseball attack: Louisiana rep critical; gunfire caught on camera

FBI Evidence Response Team members mark evidence at the scene of a multiple shooting in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, involving House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La., and others during a congressional baseball practice. "I'm especially thankful to the US Capitol Police who risked their lived to protect us".

Scalise was shot in the leg, according to Congressman Mo Brooks. However, it is not clear if he will have a second surgery. As of Wednesday afternoon, Mika was in surgery and in critical condition, according to a statement from his family.

The couple brought two large bouquets of white flowers for the injured lawmaker's wife, as well as for Crystal Griner, a US Capitol Police officer also wounded in the gun attack.

The Louisiana representative was one of five people shot during a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning.

Texas Rep. Roger Williams, who coaches the GOP team, said that one of his aides, Zack Barth, was shot, but "is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery". Congressional and law enforcement sources described it as a "deliberate attack". He had been a volunteer in the Democratic primary campaign of Sen.

"Hey, is that guy OK out there?" the witness asks, at one point, in apparent reference to Rep. Steve Scalise who was badly injured in the shooting. Personally, we have our Italian-American connection, so as soon as I heard his name, I was filled with concern as I would be for anyone here, but we had that special connection, so our hopes and prayers. "I'm seeing shots skipping off of the warning track", he said.

President Donald Trump made an evening visit to the hospital where a critically wounded U.S. congressman is receiving treatment Wednesday. "And that's when I ran out to Steve and applied pressure on the wound", Flake said.

Rep. Jeff Duncan said in a statement that he was at the practice and "saw the shooter".

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault", Trump said after the attack. Arriving at MedStar around 8:45 p.m. ET, President Trump and Melania left the medical center and are now back at the White House, reports CNN. A suspect is believed to be in custody. Hodgkinson wrote in the post: "Here's a Republic that should lose his job, but they gave him a raise".
