Bernie Sanders says man ID'd as shooter was on campaign

Scott Pelley will anchor the "CBS Evening News" from Washington tonight and the program will expand to an hour to accommodate coverage of the shooting that left five people wounded and sent Scalise to the hospital for surgery after being shot in the hip.

The suspect was a staunch Bernie Sanders supporter who reportedly targeted the congressmen due to their political affiliation and publicly advocated violence against the GOP in the past, notes The Hill. He was killed in an exhange of gunfire with police on the scene. We're still trying to learn what led him to carry out the attack this morning. Jeff Flake said Mika was the most seriously injured.

"I was batting, we heard a loud noise...." Everybody thought, that sounds like a gun. "The gunman was over by the third base dugout with a clear view of the field".

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who was one of the GOP lawmakers who witnessed the attack, said, "Had they not been there, it would have been a massacre".

"I helped him get elected". Brooks was on deck when the shooting started. "The only weapon I had was a baseball bat". They have a rifle. Barton is the baseball team's manager.

"He shot at Steve Scalise, our second baseman".

Scalise dragged himself off the infield leaving a trail of blood as colleagues rushed to his assistance.

BARTON: Scalise's security detail and the Capitol Hill Police immediately began to return fire.

Federal officials told NBC News that he left IL for the Alexandria area several weeks ago, and they continue to investigate both that move as well as a motive for the shooting.

Filous said she saw the shooter hit a uniformed law enforcement officer, who she said was later evacuated by helicopter.

CHIEF MICHAEL BROWN: We were there within three minutes.

Still, Evanko said he didn't see Hodgkinson as the type of person who would "do something this heinous" and didn't even notice any overt political leanings at the time.

"The United States Capitol Police is dedicated to its mission to protect the U.S. Capitol, members of Congress, staff and the visiting public", Verderosa said.

"Do we know where he's at?" the man filming shouts to those near him.

"We need to vote all Republicans out of office", said a letter in 2011. And there was nothing earth-shattering about it.

JOE MOSKOVITZ: We saw a large number of police, fire trucks, ambulances, unfortunately two people being loaded on gurneys into those ambulances.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault", Mr Trump said.

In a statement, Texas Rep. Roger Williams, one of the team's coaches, said one of his staff members, legislative correspondent Zack Barth, was shot during the incident and is receiving medical attention.
