Trump's announcement that the United States would withdraw from the global accord drew ridicule from foreign leaders around the world and made the USA one of only three countries not signed up to the accord, the others being Nicaragua and Syria.
Hawaii Sen. J. Kalani English introduced SB 559, and said in the release that the signing of these two bills allows the state "legal basis" to stay in line with the Paris accord "despite the Federal government's withdrawal".
Hawaii on Tuesday became the first state in the country with laws that implement portions of the Paris climate deal.
The government has pledged that greenhouse gas emissions will peak no later than 2030 under the Paris pact, and start to fall after then. A commission will be created to oversee efforts at every level of the state government to help hit the targets outlined in the Paris Agreement. "Climate change is real, regardless of what others may say", USA Today quotes Ige as saying. Unlike Elon Musk, IBM CEO Ginni Rometty made a decision to remain on Trump's business advisory council following the U.S. withdrawal.
For now, he said, China, European countries and individual US states will fill the gap left by the federal government's move to abdicate leadership on the issue.
North Korea has vowed to combat deforestation but is viewed as increasingly vulnerable to climate change, given the country's frequent food shortages.
"Hawaii's natural environment is under threat", Ige said. Google searches for "climate changed" also peaked in the U.S.in the last 30 days, as did searches for "trump" and "trump climate change".
"The world now needs new leaders, both at the global and local levels and have no doubt that the departure of the USA will give room to a whole new set of dynamics but the work will proceed", he added.
The U.S.is now one of just three countries worldwide to be either outside the agreement or on their way out, with Syria and Nicaragua as the other two nations. "President Trump may have pulled out of the Paris climate agreement, but Hawaiʻi is on the frontlines of climate impacts and we remain committed to action".
