Led by LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, the Cavaliers looked to find the extra gear they'd been missing in the opening three matches, threatening to exploit mental ghosts that accompanied a Warriors 3-1 finals lead from the 2015/16 season. And as had been the case in the first three games, it was Durant (21 first half points) and Curry (20 first half points, five assists, four rebounds) leading the way. The Warriors' machine just hummed along and similar to the regular season Curry and Durant would be out at the start of the second and fourth quarters with Green and Thompson with bench units. But this game, like the rest of this series, didn't seem to be so much about what Cleveland could offer as it was about what any team possibly could to counter something like Golden State.
"We tried to contain it and keep it a half-court game, but they continued to push the pace", Kevin Love said. He chose Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and a chance at his first championship over returning to Oklahoma City.
Not this time. Though the lead changed several times early in Game 5, it was all the Warriors in the back end of the game. Without a doubt, Durant was the stopper every time the Cavs threatened and the ultimate difference.
Led by LeBron James' 41 points, the Cavaliers hung within 108-102 with 8:29 to play on a 3-pointer by Kyle Korver. LeBron James has 27 points, but has played 35 of the 36 minutes.
Whereas Durant may have never signed with Golden State, Cleveland may have felt the pressure to make a major move, such as trading Kevin Love or another piece of its starting rotation.
However, the Cavs did not roll over, they had great shotmaking to come out in the third, attacked the mismatches they wanted and were more disciplined, cutting the lead to four at one point. I put in work, I just had to trust in it.
After the game, Durant was quoted to be saying by Reuters, "I couldn't sleep for two days". Things will only get worse for Cleveland in the future as James ages.
Golden State is your National Basketball Association champion, beating Cleveland 4-1. Four and half months without the National Basketball Association, but there is always news. Game 4, apart from being utter insanity, was a dominant performance from Cleveland, and the team showed they can be just as unstoppable as the Warriors at their best. "It's tough to get back and get matched, especially with their speed".
"So I would hope we're more ready, more prepared tonight".
We joke, but what else would you call Golden State at this point?
The gap between the Cavs and Warriors is wide.
But that idea fizzled fast when the Warriors opened with a pair of lopsided wins at home, fought back late to steal the next game in Cleveland and then, after dropping their first game of the postseason, closed out the series at home.
