Senator Paul calls Virginia shooting a 'killing field'

Paul said that the Republican members of Congress had been practicing on the baseball field for two months preparing for the annual congressional baseball game that will take place on Thursday.

Doug Stafford, the chief strategist for Rand Paul, confirmed via Twitter that the Kentucky senator was at the practice when the shooting happened. President Trump has condemned the shooting incident. Those who were in the dugout were just 20 yards from the shooter.

Paul said Scalise's leadership role in the House was what warranted the security detail he credited with neutralizing the shooter.

They returned gunfire with the shooter, and were later joined by Alexandria police who arrived three minutes after cops were called.

"People on the field, unfortunately, didn't have much of a chance because nobody could get to them and they couldn't get to us".

"If Scalise wouldn't have been on the team - unfortunately he was hit and I hope he does well - but also by him being there it probably saved everybody else's life because if you don't have a leadership person there, there would have been so security there", Paul said.

"We are just regular people" outside of Capitol Hill, Paul said.

"Then finally we heard the response from the Capitol Hill police". ABC News and other outlets reported two members of the Capitol Police Department were hit and one of them was able to return fire.

Senator Paul estimated at least 50 shots were fired in quick succession. Officials with the U.S. Capitol Police, Alexandria Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation later confirmed five people, including Scalise and the shooter, were wounded and transported to local hospitals.

"I'm sure it made a significant difference", Slater said of the officer's' presence as the shooting transpired.

He said Scalise, 51, suffered "a hip wound".

The Louisiana Republican is the House Majority Whip, and is thus assigned a Capitol Police plainclothes security detail.
