President Donald Trump is schedule to promote his plans for a $1 trillion overhaul of the nation's crumbling roads, bridges and waterways during a speech along the Ohio River. Republicans point the finger at Democrats, while Democrats say insurers are getting out now because they don't see any continuing support from Trump's government. He spoke before a crowd at Rivertowne Marina.
"We are a nation that created the Panama Canal, the Transcontinental Railroad and ... the great highway system - the interstate highways system".
Several hundred people - some of them members of the marina, others business people and labor leaders - crowded into a small area along the river for a speech that was heavy on talk of fixing the locks, dams and levees of the country's 12,000 miles of inland waterways, including on the Ohio River.
Whalen's monthly premiums have quadrupled and she has a $15,000 deductible, post Obamacare, Trump said. People don't want to see what's going on.
He did not mention one antiquated and overworked bridge only a few miles away - the Brent Spence Bridge connecting Cincinnati and Kentucky.
"America must have the best, fastest and most reliable infrastructure anywhere in the world", Trump said, pushing his infrastructure plan in middle America as Washington geared up for Thursday's appearance before Congress by fired FBI Director James Comey.
Democrats, some Republicans and groups representing the nation's governors and mayors have said much more than $200 billion in direct federal spending is needed to meet the nation's needs - and that relying on states, municipalities and the private sector won't get needed work done. "We have to figure out how to make it work".
Senior aides touted an air traffic control overhaul plan and prepared infrastructure-themed remarks that Trump delivered rather speedily Thursday in OH; then their boss repeatedly swerved off message.
According to the White House, the United States infrastructure system has fallen to 12th place in the world ranking. Those private meetings were to take place at Lunken Airport.
"The Democrats are really in our way", the president said in remarks at the Cincinnati airport, prior to another event on infrastructure.
Trump spoke a day after Anthem announced it would not participate in the Obamacare insurance exchanges next year in OH, a potentially crippling blow to the healthcare system.
Of Trump and even his closest lieutenants, Stone said "they don't speak with one voice". "One of the biggest broken promises ever".
He added, "If I was in that party, I wouldn't be doing it that way, that's why they lost the House, the Senate and the White House". And that's even before former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump has appeared to admit firing in part to ease his worries over the bureau's Russian Federation probe, testifies in what is being called the "Super Bowl" of recent congressional hearings on Thursday. The investigation into Russian election meddling and ties with Trump's campaign hang over everything.
