Pa. has two members on GOP team that was target of attack

Two law enforcement sources told CNN the shooter, who is in police custody, has been taken to a hospital.

There is increased security outside the U.S. Capitol, with more officers guarding the East Front with long weapons. A public event that had been scheduled for President Trump at the Labor Department this afternoon is now canceled.

Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, helped Scalise once he was shot.

As of 9:45 a.m. ET, Scalise was in stable condition but undergoing surgery, according to a statement from his office.

Trump commended Capitol Police officers who responded to the shooting and other first responders.

The Congressional Women's Softball Game organizing committee said in a statement, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Congressional Baseball team and staff".

The shooter opened fire at a baseball field at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park, across the parking lot from Alexandria's YMCA.

Scalise told the New Orleans Times-Picayune he didn't recall the conference and "didn't know who all of these groups were". He added that at least two officers fired at the gunman.

Brooks said the gunman was armed with a rifle and appeared to be a white male, "a little bit on the chubby side".

Multiple congressman at the scene in Alexandria, Va., said Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was among those wounded. It was a terrifying scene, witnesses said; Brooks estimated that more than 50 shots were fired. "We are praying for our GOP friends & colleagues and awaiting updates".

We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

"We were so lucky Capitol Hill Police were there", Paul said. "My thoughts and prayers are with Steve Scalise, the Capitol Police, and all of those that are affected".

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who plays on the Democratic team, told Fox News that they practice at a different facility than where the shooting occurred this morning.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now heading up the investigation because members of Congress were involved in the shooting.
