Alexandria police said on Twitter that the shooter is in custody and is no longer a threat.
(CNN) - Rep. Mo Brooks recounted horrific details from the shooting Wednesday in which House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and a number of others were wounded by a gunman apparently wielding a rifle.
"I was the first out to Steve", he recalled, explaining that Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), a doctor, began to treat Scalise after the attack was halted.
In a statement, Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic presidential nomination a year ago, said Hodgkinson volunteered on his campaign.
Scalise was in a stable condition at George Washington University Hospital, a congressional aide told the Associated Press. Of those shot were reportedly aides to Scalise and officers with the U.S. Capitol Police. Paul told the network that Capitol Police officers saved many lives. She said the officer had gotten out of a parked vehicle, drawn a handgun and shouted something to the gunman, who then fired. Several other people were also wounded, officials said.
"And I look around and behind third base in the third base dugout, I see a rifle", Brooks said. Hodgkinson's wife told ABC that her husband had been living in Alexandria for two months prior to the shooting.
"Please pray for my colleagues", Duncan said.
Scalise is the Republican majority whip in the House of Representatives - the congressman responsible for counting votes and maintaining party discipline.
He also said that two Capitol officers - a man and a woman - were shot and one of them was airlifted to the hospital. We are deeply saddened by the tragedy.
The gunman who shot a top Republican politician at a congressional baseball practice has died from his injuries, US President Donald Trump said.
