'Dear Evan Hansen' and 'Hello Dolly' Win Big at Tony Awards

Host Kevin Spacey ushered in the 71st Tony Awards, parodying some of this season's big musicals like "Dear Evan Hansen" and "Groundhog Day The Musical".

Bette ended her speech by dedicating her award to all of the Dollys that have come before her, such as Carol Channing, who originated the role on Broadway in 1964, and Pearl Bailey.

It was worthy of the standing ovation that it received from his peers that were gathered at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Award presenter Stephen Colbert got political too, taking on Donald Trump by likening his presidency to a revival of a 1980s off-Broadway show with "huge production values".

In all the pandemonium tonight I neglected to thank the brilliant ensemble of 'Hello Dolly, ' whom I adore. Dear Evan Hansen, directed by Michael Greif, picked up six awards in total, including a best leading actor Tony for 23-year-old Ben Platt in the title role.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who recently won an Oscar for the song "City of Stars" from the movie "La La Land", added to a remarkable year by earning Tonys for best score for writing the songs for "Dear Evan Hansen".

Bette Midler picked up the award for Best Actress in a Musical at Sunday night's 2017 Tony Awards.

Speaking back stage, she took the chance to pay tribute to her former speech and drama teachers, Myrna Ishimoto and Betty Blake Rice. But she persisted and outlived the track.

"I want to get the hell out of here before Bette Midler thanks anyone else". Hello Dolly! proudly took home four awards to include Best Revival of a Musical.

Laurie Metcalf won the award for best actress in a play for A Doll's House Part Two and Kevin Kline won for best actor in a play for Present Laughter. His co-star in the show, Rachel Bay Jones, took home the top award for an Actress Featured in a Musical, and thanked her grandmother for selling her engagement ring in order to pay for her ticket to move to NY, despite her parents' doubts about the decision.

Along with Jonah, Platt's mom and dad were also in attendance at the Tony Awards.

During the star's lengthy speech, the event runners began playing music as a call for Midler to wrap it up.

Denee Benton was nominated for her role in Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. Surprising no one, Midler kept doling out thanks, even waving her hand with an annoyed "shut that crap off" at one point.

So, when he won the Tony Award Sunday night for best actor in a musical, he urged young people not to give up the qualities that make them special.

Unlike past year, when "Hamilton" dominated the show and won 11 Tonys, the wealth was spread out this time. There are people being born, people dying.

In the hit musical, Hansen creates a fake email chain between him and another student at his high school who had committed suicide just days before, in an attempt to provide the grieving parents some solace that their late son had at least one friend with whom he could talk.
