Alleged shooter identified as James T. Hodgkinson

Among the confirmed injured is U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-New Orleans), the House majority whip.

Kentucky Sen. Randding to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a "deliberate attack".

The shooter has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, The Associated Press reports.

The shooting took place just south of Washington, DC, in Alexandria, Virginia. Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana was shot and wounded, as were several other people. U.S. Capitol Police officers are being widely praised for helping to stop the attack.

He said Capitol Hill police officers in Scalise's security detail exchanged gunfire with the active shooter.

Update: Shots were first fired at 7:09 a.m.

The White House has been briefed on this incident.

"Whip Scalise was shot in the hip".

Flake said he used Scalise's cell phone to call the congressman's wife and inform her of the shooting.

Trump praised the "heroic actions" of the Capital Police at the scene. Then he said he suddenly saw Scalise bleeding, crawling into the outfield. "It's literally ABC. You want to make sure the airway is open, make sure the person is breathing and "C" stands for circulation, which is basically trying to control blood loss", he said. Officer Jacob Chestnut and Detective John Gibson were shot to death on July 24, 1998.

Steve Scalise, a member of the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, is known for his love of baseball and the late-night meals he often serves his colleagues in his office near the Capitol's ornate Statuary Hall.

Sources say 50 to 100 shots were fired and five people are believed to be hit.

Republican Rep. Roger Williams' congressional district stretches from Austin to Fort Worth and includes Burnet County. He was reportedly shot in the hip and is expected to recover.

Rep. Steve Pearce of New Mexico, who was at the practice but unharmed, tweeted prayers for the victims.

The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, where politicians and others were gathered for a morning practice at about 7am local time.

President Donald Trump said he was "deeply saddened by this tragedy" and was monitoring developments.

Mr Sanders, of Vermont, said in a statement: "I am sickened by this despicable act". When asked if he had a message for Scalise and the others who were wounded, Costello said "We're praying for you, and for the staffers and security detail".

He repeatedly praised the Capitol Police officers and first responders who quickly mobilized to the softball field where the Republican baseball team was practicing ahead of Thursday night's charity game against a Democratic team.
