James had a game-high 41 points and Irving hit tough shots all night but defensive breakdowns by Cleveland led to easy baskets late in the game for the Warriors, igniting a deafening crowd.
It's not as simple as "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em".
With the lead up to 17 and halftime fast approaching Smith hit back-to-back threes on the Cavs final two possessions to get this back to a deficit from which it still felt like it was one the Cavaliers could come back.
Both the games in Oakland went to the home team, behind MVP-worthy performances from Kevin Durant.
So Durant made the necessary choice.
They better be after their Game 4 flop in Cleveland.
The Cavs cut the Warriors' lead to four in the third quarter, but the Warriors fought through to hold on to a 98-93 advantage by the start of the fourth.
"I couldn't sleep for two days", Durant, who was named the Finals MVP, said during an on-court interview. He averaged a (dang) triple-double.
"I left everything on the floor every game, all five games", he said.
And yet, in the aftermath, LeBron was very much the story, at least in Durant's eyes. To be back here, bring (the title) back home, I'm just excited to do something special. But that's where the sympathy ended.
James said in a press conference screened on nba.com: "I'm not happy he won his first - I'm not happy at all". "I'm not happy at all".
It was a rowdy taunt, a jeering jibe, a playful fantasy in the time just past the witching hour on Saturday in the US.
After the finals win, Kerr thanked Brown, but also joked about coaching a squad that had two NBA MVP's and and exceptional bench.
The Miami Heat became the sixth team in National Basketball Association history to win consecutive titles, but it was not easy.
That made Durant's move even less palatable to some than the scorned Decision.
He dedicated the trophy to his mother Wanda in his remarks.
"The backstory is after Game 7 last year, I told one of my close friends to save this for a year from now to be able to enjoy the process and journey". He was certain, but he was still kind of unfamiliar with the territory. But I relish in that challenge.
Durant also had to navigate the stardom-sharing duties with Curry. Stephen Curry chipped in 34 points on 10-20 shooting with six rebounds and 10 assists. But Curry wouldn't have been on stage as a two-time champion if not for Durant.
But the Warriors are brimming with confidence, knowing they didn't have Kevin Durant to help them a year ago. Odds are, this is not the last we see of them.
Andre Iguodala has scored 11 of Golden State's 22 bench points. We would love to take care of business.
