Iranians dance in streets as soccer team qualifies for 2018 World Cup

Iran are the first Asian team to qualify for next year's FIFA World Cup™.

The Iranian national team on football after the home victory over Uzbekistan (2:0) have officially booked a trip to Russian Federation for the final stage of the world Cup.

The three-time Asian champions, who also missed a penalty just after the break, join Brazil as the qualified nations so far after Iran secured a fifth World Cup appearance.

Besides host Russian Federation and five-time World Cup winners Brazil, Iran is now the third soccer team to have confirmed its presence at the worldwide association football competition contested by 32 teams. "We are so happy and proud of our team", said Iran fan Reza Ghanbari in northern Tehran's Tajrish Square.

The top two teams in each group will qualify automatically for Russian Federation 2018, with the third-placed teams set to meet each other for the right to face the fourth-placed team in the CONCACAF final qualifying group.

Captain Masoud Shojaei squandered the chance to double Iran's advantage five minutes into the second half when he fired a penalty over the bar after Taremi had been bundled over in the box by Akmal Shorakhmedov. Iran will finish top of the group.

Another victory in the qualifying round the team of Carlos karusha brought goals Cerdan Asana and Mehdi Taremi.

Kazmoun opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and then produced the cross from which Taremi sealed the victory in injury time.
