The Golden State Warriors used a 28-4 flurry in the second quarter to take a lead they never relinquished, then relied on the scoring of Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry down the stretch to hold off the Cleveland Cavaliers en route to a 129-120 victory Monday night, clinching their second National Basketball Association championship in the past three seasons.
The Warriors previous year, failed to finish off the Cleveland Cavaliers in the finals, blowing a 3-1 lead in the series.
LeBron James had a game-high 41 points but defensive breakdowns by Cleveland led to easy baskets late in the game for the Warriors, igniting a deafening crowd.
"Since 2012 he is the only one I have ever looked at", Durant said.
The 2017 NBA Finals served as a rubber match of sorts between the teams.
Durant shot 14 of 20 overall and 5 of 8 on 3-pointers, hitting three of his threes during the critical second-quarter run that lasted more than seven minutes and turned a 41-33 deficit into a 61-45 advantage.
The run helped the Warriors win the second quarter by 15 points.
And to the surprise of no one who watched the series, Durant was named NBA Finals MVP.
LeBron James has 12 points and so does Kyrie Irving for the Cavs. He hit a 17-foot fadeaway over James early in the fourth quarter, then assisted on a 3-pointer by Andre Iguodala the next time down as the Warriors pulled away.
When it comes to NBA Finals records and clubs, there are a bunch that include many members of the Boston Celtics. After scoring 49 points in the first quarter of Game 4, the Cavs are out to a 22-18 lead midway through the first quarter Monday night.
Game 5 of the NBA Finals is underway, with the Warriors holding a 3-1 lead and hoping to close the series out Monday night at home. The 9-0 burst was completed after Kevin Love picked up his second foul in a game the officials are calling a little tighter after the physical play in Game 4.
Cleveland's inability to give the Warriors much of a fight has already sparked talk that James, who left the team in 2010 for Miami before returning four years later, could consider another move during 2018 free agency. As the Warriors learned, James and the rest of the Cavs can make a series lead vanish if you let them.
"I just had to trust in it, we were really good tonight", Durant said after the game. We battled and I told him we're tied up now.
