The new film, starring Gal Gadot, fell slightly short of surpassing Fifty Shades' global opening total, which was £187 million, taking £5.82 million in the UK.
With Wonder Woman now making a killing in movie theaters across the globe, director Petty Jenkins has already set her sights on the inevitable and totally deserved (because the DCEU movie is pretty awesome: go see it!) sequel.
Nevertheless, Wonder Woman represents a turning point for Warner Bros. and DC Comics, which have together struggled in recent years to match the Marvel-Disney juggernaut. As the first solo movie for a female superhero since Jennifer Garner's Elektra in 2005, there was plenty of obnoxious speculation as to whether Wonder Woman would sink or swim at the box office.
Posting an article from the associated press announcing the North American debut of the female-led superhero film reaching $100.5 million in the box office, Evans gave a warm and explosive congrats to Wonder Woman.
To say Wonder Woman is crushing the box office right now would be an understatement. Everyone from Lupita Nyong'o to Chris Hemsworth has been raving about director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot, and now it seems the Hollywood gods have answered all of our prayers: Wonder Woman is getting a sequel! According to Box Office Mojo, Wonder Woman ranked 16th on the list of comic book adaptations' opening weekends - sixth if you don't count sequels - and could end up taking in around $300 million throughout its theatrical run. As one example, some couldn't understand why she wanted her heroine to cross No Man's Land, a pivotal moment in the movie when Diana Prince assumes her role as a full-fledged superhero, shield and all.
Wonder Woman opened in Irish cinemas on Thursday, June 1.
I'm not a big obligation person when it comes to art. "I think on this movie, all of us got it right". Jenkins didn't spill any details on what she plans for the plot of Wonder Woman 2, but she told EW, "It's a attractive story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love".
There are diminishing returns, to be sure, but so far it looks like Wonder Woman certainly isn't among them.
Wonder Woman is out now in theaters.
