'Wonder Woman' just completely shattered a very important box office record

Do you think Wonder Woman will remain the number one film next weekend?

Reports also state that the film has surpassed all other Marvel Universe films with the exception of The Avengers.

The super origin story has taken the record from Fifty Shades of Grey, whose female director Sam Taylor-Johnson helped the film rake in $85.2 million during its 2015 opening.

Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, now holds the title of biggest box office opening for a female-directed film, raking in just over $100 million this past weekend. Pictures and DC Films'Wonder Woman opened to a powerful $100.5 million domestically from 4,165 theaters, for an average of $24,131 per location.

Rottentomatoes gave "Wonder Woman" a smooth 93% and I completely agree with the score. You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it. Given this weekend's box office success, a sequel announcement is probably isn't too far behind.

To keep the plot short: Diana, an Amazon princess seemingly born of the gods to be the protector of humanity, finds herself pushed into battle after pilot Steve Trevor crash-lands on the island of Themyscira and she learns the horrors of World War I.

Though critically lauded and financially successful, the release of Wonder Woman hasn't come without controversy. The balance of humor (Gadot's projection of a naïve, sheltered warrior in the big, bad world) and emotion (her character's unbending sense of honor, outrage over war and discovery of the power of love) both ground and elevate the film. And what say you about Wonder Woman 2 coming to America?

Throughout the modern era of superhero films, audiences have always been waiting for one thing: A well-made female-led comic book movie. Jenkins didn't spill any details on what she plans for the plot of Wonder Woman 2, but she told EW, "It's a attractive story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love". In the meantime, Gadot's Wonder Woman returns this November for Justice League. One thing is for certain, though: Wonder Woman kicked ass this weekend, and it will continue to do so.
