Rafael Nadal cruises past Roberto Bautista Agut to reach quarters

Nadal reached a record-equalling 11th Roland Garros quarterfinal with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win over Spanish compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut.

Japan's Kei Nishikori fought off a fierce five-set challenge from rising South Korean talent Hyeon Chung to clinch a place in the last 16 with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 0-6, 6-4 victory.

As if by stealth, Dominic Thiem moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 win over Horacio Zeballos.

Monfils, 30, was leading 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 4-3 when his opponent withdrew, setting up a last-16 meeting with Wawrinka.

Though Djokovic enters the contest as the overwhelming favourite, 23-year-old Thiem is the only player to defeat Nadal on clay this season before entering the second Grand Slam of 2017 with the third best odds to go the distance.

"The first set I had a big lead but I started making catastrophic errors", Bacsinszky said.

In his quarterfinal, nine-time French Open champion Nadal faces No. 20 Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain at Court Philippe Chatrier.

But both of the tennis heavyweights have been forced to wait because of rain, setting up a bumper Wednesday of quarter final action. A guy I saw as in a similar position as Murray going in was Novak Djokovic, but after watching him play this week and seeing the way he's handled adversity in his matches, I think he has the second-best chance to win the tournament.

Muguruza won only 15 points in the first set and, although she rallied to take it to a third, could not match French 13th seed Mladenovic.

Two weeks past his 21 {+s} t birthday, Khachanov became the youngest man to reach the fourth round here since 2009, beating 21 {+s} t-seeded John Isner - the last American man in the tournament - 7-6 (1), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3). I'm very happy to be in the quarters of the French once again. "I think I've played at a very good level, which is good for my confidence and positive news for me".
