Penguins Beat Predators 2-0 For Second Consecutive Stanley Cup

The Predators' magical run to the Final began with a domanant, four-game sweep of the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks, a team that many believed Nashville would be lucky to win a single game against.

Pittsburgh Penguins Owner Mario Lemieux hoists the Stanley Cup after defeating the Nashville Predators 2-0 in Game 6 of the NHL hockey Stanley Cup Final, Sunday, June 11, 2017, in Nashville, Tenn.

There are lots of very good reasons the Penguins shouldn't have repeated as Cup champs, and they all knew it too.

"There's been a lot of guys telling us we can't do it, and now we're standing here", Hornqvist said. "'Why can't we? Let's not let somebody else write our story'". Also, it was a foregone conclusion, months ago, that Golden State would win the National Basketball Association title and that's not good for any league ... The changes and surprises were positive ones.

This year, it was Jake Guentzel. At the 2005 NHL draft, as the league tried to fix itself after commissioner Gary Bettman's lockout-cancelled season, the Penguins chose Crosby with the first overall selection and the Predators snatched Hornqvist with the 230th and final pick.

What should have done the Penguins in was losing Kris Letang to neck surgery in April. "Sometimes you've got to do what's best for the team".

The remaining blueline corps did not exactly inspire fear: Dumoulin-Hainsey, Maatta-Daley, Schultz-Cole. "He was our leader and picked up the team when we needed it".

It has already been quite an interesting career for Matt Murray. If a team is given that many chances, they have to convert and they didn't and that's why there isn't a Game 7. "I'm trying to relax a bit here". Maybe that's because their role goes without saying.

Though this series had been close, with the Penguins taking a three-games-to-two lead after their Game 5 win in Pittsburgh, the games themselves haven't been that competitive.

He's coming off a 44-goal, 89-point season (and a 27-point postseason) at age 29, which means he's still at the top of his game.

Forget a golden anniversary: The Penguins will cap their 50th season with their names on the most famous silver cup in sports - again. He played the rest of the game but was not able to get back on the ice throughout the rest of the series in spite of his best efforts to will himself to do so. He said his team had worked hard to keep improving with each game. "I think it will start to sink in the next few days". Team captain Sidney Crosby was awarded the Conn Smyth trophy as Most Valuable Player of this year's Stanley Cup playoffs - the second time he has claimed the honor.

Like a year ago, Dumoulin will once again choose how to spend his allotted day with the Stanley Cup. It's a privilege to watch, even if it's not always a pleasure. "Just to be alongside him for most of this year, how he's helped me personally and get through these struggles". He wanted a third ring so each of his three boys will have a keepsake for the rest of their lives.

Despite the loss of both their starting goalie and their No.1 defenceman, despite an extended slump from Phil Kessel, a slow start from Crosby in the final, and a blue line that was running on hope and fumes, the Penguins still managed to lift the Cup at the end. But a amusing thing happens when you win enough: You start beating people over the head with your greatness and they have no choice but to accept it. Don't wait for the remove of history to appreciate it. These Penguins did something incredible.
