N. Korea Rejects New UNSC Resolution, Vows to Continue Nuke Program

Though US military exercises in the Korean peninsula had been controversial in the worldwide community, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley urged Security Council members to enforce the new sanctions.
"Beyond diplomatic and financial consequences, the United States remains prepared to counteract North Korean aggression through other means, if necessary", UN Ambassador Nikki Haley said after the unanimous vote.
China blocked tough new sanctions against North Korea that the United States pushed in the U.N. Security Council on Friday.
The U.S. has about 28,500 troops permanently based in South Korea, a defense treaty ally.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has voiced support for the unanimous United Nations decision and called on North Korea to refrain from repeated nuclear tests and missile launches.

Nevertheless, China was reminded by Mattis that its " artificial island construction and indisputable militarization of facilities on features" in the worldwide waters of the South China undermine regional stability, while also reasserting the US military's right to "continue to fly, sail and operate wherever global law allows and demonstrate resolve through operational presence in the South China Sea and beyond".

North Korea condemned on Sunday the latest United Nations sanctions against it, saying that they were aimed at hindering its efforts to strengthen its nuclear power.
"Our two countries can and do co-operate for mutual benefit. Once we've exhausted all possible alternatives, the Americans will do the right thing", he said. "All states involved in territorial disagreements in the South China Sea need to adhere to the principle of the non-use of force", he said.
"While competition between the U.S. and China, the world's two largest economies, is bound to occur, conflict is not inevitable", Mattis said.
Mattis also directed severe criticism at China's land reclamation and militarization activities in the South China Sea.
In his speech at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue forum, Gen Mattis said: "We oppose countries militarising artificial islands and enforcing excessive maritime claims". He said, United States can not and will not accept unilateral, coercive changes to the status quo.
