Bill Cosby's wife, Camille, has arrived at court with him on the sixth day of his sexual assault trial. The couple have four daughters. Bill Cosby goes on trial Monday, June 5, 2017, in suburban Philadelphia in a sexual assault case that will largely rest on the testimony of Constand.
Meanwhile, the veteran performer could charm jurors at his sexual assault trial if he testifies this week, but experts say the risk would be considerable. Earlier in the trial, Constand's mother testified that she wasn't looking for money from the entertainer.
Cosby's lawyers were seeking an exception, arguing that these facts pertain to Constand's credibility.
"He could be a fantastic witness. He's an actor and he's a very good actor", said Duquesne University School of Law professor Wes Oliver. His client, convicted child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky, had wanted to testify at his 2012 trial, but that would have allowed prosecutors to have his adopted son testify about alleged abuse during rebuttal testimony.
Detective Richard Schaffer was one of 12 witnesses who testified during the five-day prosecution case. "It would be very bad for him for the jury to even begin to think about the other women". A lawyer who worked on the case recalled her account of being drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby and had notes to back up his memory. He said the encounter occurred in 1990, while Johnson insists it was 1996, the year she left her job. They also poured over her phone records to show 73 later phone calls between her and Cosby. After the incident, Constand acknowledged under questioning from both sides that she maintained contact with Cosby but said she felt obligated to do so because of her job. The jury also heard Cosby's version in the form of his police statement and his lurid deposition in her 2005 lawsuit. His answers, like his comedy routines, meandered and veered toward stream of consciousness.
"When you got the quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?" the TV star known as America's Dad was asked. He spoke in the deposition of "the penile entrance" and "digital penetration". And he can display hints of arrogance.
"I apologized to this woman", Cosby said, according to the deposition.
Though he had announced last month that he would not take the stand in his own defense, Cosby and his defense team began reconsidered that strategy last week, as Deadline exclusively reported.
Cosby didn't respond Friday when asked by The Associated Press if he would take the stand to defend himself against the charges that could put him in prison for the rest of his life.
Next week, Cosby's defense team will be tasked with proving that Cosby and Constand's relationship was consensual, or at least proving that there's not enough evidence to suggest that Cosby intentionally drugged and assaulted Constand.
