Trump tweets on Comey, declares 'total vindication'

Within hours, the bipartisan leadership of the House Intelligence wrote the White House asking for production of tapes with conversations between Trump and Comey. All along, Burr and Warner have said they plan to meet with Jared Kushner, a top White House adviser and President Trump's son-in-law.

Comey recalled that Trump and the White House gave shifting explanations for why he was dismissed, first saying it was over his handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe previous year, then saying it was the Russian Federation investigation, and finally declaring Comey was a poor leader disliked by the FBI staff.

"He's a leaker", Trump said of Comey. "Mr. Trump, if you disagree with anything the director said today, play the tapes for all of America to hear or admit that there were no tapes".

Comey said he started taking notes after his first meeting with then-President-elect Trump because he felt that Trump might lie about the nature of the meetings. And special counsel Robert Mueller's team will conduct a criminal investigation that, based on Mueller's reputation, likely won't produce many leaked tidbits or updates to the outside world. "And Kasowitz convinced him that not only will I defend you, but I will attack Comey where there's room to".

In his opening statement, Comey sombrely accused the Trump administration of spreading "lies, plain and simple" in the aftermath of his abrupt ouster, declaring that the administration "chose to defame me and, more importantly, the FBI" by claiming the bureau was in disorder.

In a remarkable series of exchanges with senior USA senators, Comey said he felt Trump had directed him, not advised, to drop his investigation into former National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn.

"Correct. I understood this to be my recollection recorded of my conversation with the president as a private citizen", says Comey.

Discussing the meeting in which Comey says Trump asked him to back off Flynn, Democratic Sen.

Comey testified on Thursday that Lynch successfully pressured him into using the Clinton campaign's spin on the investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state.

The committee leaders wrote White House counsel Don McGahn "requesting" he confirm the existence of any recordings or memoranda of Trump-Comey conversations, and asked for copies be produced to the Committee within two weeks. Of course, this is a reference to Trump's tweet warning Comey that there may be "tapes" of their conversations. Still, he maintained he had never asked Comey for a pledge of allegiance.

Comey told a Senate committee Thursday that he believes Trump fired him over the Russian Federation probe, and he accused the White House of lying about the details of the dismissal.

Comey said he shared the memo with "a professor at Columbia Law School, a reference to Daniel Richman, who confirmed to Reuters he was the person Comey referred to in his testimony".

Comey says he wanted the information leaked to the media that involved Trump suggesting Comey drop an investigation into Flynn. "So, the more information, the better".

Sources close to the process told National Public Radio that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was looking at Mueller as a replacement for Director James Comey, who was sacked on May 9.

"We were also aware of facts that I can't disclose in an open setting", Comey said.
