Portland white supremacist describes stabbings to court: 'I call it patriotism'

A man charged with fatally stabbing two men and injuring a third who tried to shield young women from an anti-Muslim tirade appeared to brag about the attacks as he sat in the back of a police patrol auto, saying "that's what liberalism gets you", according to court documents.

A witness who was on the MAX when three men were stabbed, did not run off the train.

United States President Donald Trump in a tweet on Monday condemned the fatal stabbings of two good samaritans who tried to stop a man from harassing a pair of women who appeared to be Muslim.

The deputy district attorney's affidavit revealed the most detailed account so far of what happened inside the light rail train on Friday.

Fletcher was one of three people who were stabbed for stepping in when a man verbally assaulted Destinee Mangum, 16, and her 17-year-old Muslim friend, who was wearing a hijab, on a MAX train.

A defiant Jeremy Joseph Christian made his first appearance Tuesday afternoon before Judge Paul G. Crowley at the Multnomah Justice Center. The 35-year-old was arraigned Tuesday on aggravated murder and other charges. Christian made his first appearance in court this week, shouting, "Free speech or die, Portland".

He has been appointed public defenders. He wore a blue jail jumpsuit and didn't say anything other than to yell slogans.

"The idea that Portland is so liberal supersedes this dark, hidden secret about racism", Gibson said.

The lone man to survive Friday's stabbings says he's having a hard time processing what happened.

He told the TV station, "I'm healing".

Fletcher, 21, told local media that he intervened during the incident on Friday because "it was the right thing to do". He recently got out of the hospital. "Without them, we probably would be dead right now".

Only about 6 percent of the Portland population is black, while more than 70 percent is non-Hispanic white, statistics show.

"You have said that you will be President for all Americans". "Let's do them honor by standing with them and carrying on their legacy of standing up to hate and bigotry and violence".

"We here in Portland tend to have a white savior complex.I think it's immensely wrong and irresponsible how much money and love we've gotten versus how much has been given to that little girl", he said.

"It's everywhere and the trouble is, it's getting more and more prevalent".

Best, an Army veteran who worked for the city of Portland, leaves behind a wife and four children. A "Trump Free Speech Rally" and a "March Against Sharia" are scheduled next month at a plaza managed by the USA government. Several counter-protests are planned. He also posted a Facebook video at the time which showed himself performing a Nazi salute. The bat was immediately confiscated by Portland police officers.

Wheeler has also asked the federal government to cancel a June 10 rally that targets Sharia law out of fears it could create unrest. That "free speech" rally and others like it were organized by Joey Gibson, who denounced Christian's actions, which he said others are using against him.

Wheeler said he would deny any applications by organizers to apply for a permit, though it was not clear whether they had sought city permission, which would be needed if the protesters want to march on streets around the park. "I haven't seen the proof". Tell us about the scene. "I can die in prison a happy man", the suspect told police while in custody following the crime.
