"I should not be involved in investigating a campaign I had a role in", Sessions said.
Former FBI Director James Comey said on Thursday that he gave a memo describing his conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump to a "close friend" and told him to share its contents with a reporter, a revelation that sparked sharp criticism from Trump's lawyer.
"James Comey has now implied under oath that the president is being investigated by the Justice Department for possible collusion with the Russian government in tampering with the 2016 election, and that the president is also being investigated for possible obstruction of justice", Olbermann asserted.
Comey said the Trump administration had lied and defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after his firing by saying the agency was in disarray and that the workforce had lost confidence in him.
As a result of that episode, a special counsel was appointed to lead an independent investigation into the Trump campaign's potential ties to the Kremlin.
In actuality, Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), chairman of the intelligence committee, asked Comey whether the president was trying to find a way for former national security adviser Mike Flynn to "save face" after having been fired, or whether he was trying to "obstruct justice" when he said he hoped Comey could "let [the investigation] go".
"Comey was thinking three steps ahead of the president by writing the memo and ensuring it couldn't be labeled classified", he said. In the post, the president said: "Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication... and WOW, Comey is a leaker".
Trump had uncharacteristically not addressed Comey's allegations on Thursday, but his Friday comments came ahead of a scheduled joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in the Rose Garden.
Comey said that soon after he was sacked he leaked the information about his interaction with Trump hoping that such a move would prompt the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the Russsian links to the Trump campaign.
This now puts added pressure on Special Counsel Robert Mueller to dig up more facts on Trump's intent, he said.
What is open to interpretation is whether what Trump said about the Flynn inquiry rises to the level of obstruction of justice.
Trump spoke about his actions to safeguard religious freedom and continued, for a second straight day, to label congressional Democrats as "obstructionists" who are blocking his agenda. Then I think that they are obligated to prosecute. I took it as a very disturbing thing. If you hated Comey heading into this hearing, you left it feeling that way.
"The president said, 'I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.' I didn't move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed", Comey said.
