Republicans close ranks around Trump during Comey testimony

Singer Lorde tweeted: "Only in 2017 would one be launching a tour and watching Comey testify at the same time". Under persistent questioning Wednesday, Coats, Rogers and McCabe all emphatically denied that Trump had brought improper pressure to bear on the Russian Federation investigation.

Comey continued even more strongly: "And although the law required no reason at all to fire an Federal Bureau of Investigation director, the administration then chose to defame me and, more importantly, the Federal Bureau of Investigation by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led". "Those were lies, plain and simple". While Comey said Trump was not personally under scrutiny as part of the Russian Federation probe, he said he believes Trump fired him to affect the investigation.

He told the Senate panel he had a "gut feeling" given the high-stakes circumstances surrounding a private discussion of sensitive subject matter with the president. Comey did not say why he found fault with the article but said standard procedure among USA intelligence officials is not to contest inaccurate stories based on classified information.

Comey's memos would not sit idly for long. "It's unusual and it's disheartening for that person to feel that from the first time they hear from a new administration".

JAMES COMEY: I think it's described in a written release from DOJ which I don't remember sitting here, but the gist is he will be recused from all matters relating to Russian Federation or the campaign.

"I can definitively say the president is not a liar, and I think it's frankly insulting that question would be asked", spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. Telemundo, in the moments before Comey started, also showed a simulated reconstruction of Trump and Comey meeting in the White House, with conversations in Spanish printed in cartoon-like bubbles over their heads.

Speaking from prepared remarks at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., attorney Marc Kasowitz noted that Comey testified that he had given a friend permission to reveal the contents of a memo about a meeting with President Trump.

"The president never, in form or substance, directed or suggested that Mr. Comey stop investigating anyone, including suggesting that Mr. Comey 'let Flynn go, ' " he said.

Comey: I think I've got to give you the same answer because it would touch on investigative matters.

Comey said Trump was referring to the Flynn investigation and that he found the comment "a very disturbing thing, very troubling". Then, says Mr Comey, the president told him that Mr Flynn had not done anything wrong in his calls with Russian Federation, and said: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go". He is a good guy. "I hope you can let this go".

Comey used the "L word" again while explaining why he made a decision to take notes during his meetings with the president. Although the Times also reported on May 11 - before Trump's tweet - about Comey's private dinner with the president, that story made no reference to Comey's contemporaneous memos.

"I was a bit stunned and didn't have the presence of mind", Comey told Sen. Comey said he informed the new deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, about Trump's line-crossing, but nothing seemed to happen.

"Comey is being careful", Carle said. The challenge, and I'm not picking on reporters about writing stories about classified information, is the people talking about it often don't really know what's going on, and those of us who know what's going on are not talking about it. Lawmakers have the authority to decide whether interfering with a lawful investigation constitutes sufficient grounds for impeachment even if not for criminal prosecution. He once again sounded the alarm on risks emanating from Moscow in his June 8 testimony.

Comey said he had "no doubt" about Russia's efforts to interfere in the election, or the hacking and leaks of the Democrats' email system.

"They want to undermine our credibility in the face the world".

"This whole thing is a giant nothing-burger", the conservative web site Breitbart News wrote as Comey talked, "except for Comey implicating himself as a leaker".
