Moving Ohio State search reportedly centered on Creighton's Greg McDermott

Smith flew to Omaha to meet with McDermott on Wednesday night, multiple reports say, before returning to Columbus alone and telling the Columbus Dispatch that no deal is complete.

Ahrens, a 6-foot-5 wing from Versailles, Ohio, is the No. 160 prospect in his class and the sixth-best player in the Buckeye State, according to 247Sports.

Matta reportedly wanted to keep coaching the Buckeyes, but athletic director Gene Smith said a change was needed after discussing the situation with the coach.

Earlier Wednesday, a source told CBS Sports that Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg was a serious candidate at Ohio State. Six of those campaigns ended with at least 20 wins, and he won a total of three Missouri Valley championships before Creighton's move to the Big East.

Most recently, the McDermott-led Creighton men's basketball team finished the 2016-2017 campaign with a 25-10 record in addition to immediately coming up short against the Rhode Island Rams in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He reached the NCAA tournament three times with Northern Iowa.

"I was honored to be coached by and taught so many lessons from a great person", Oden told ESPN after the announcement.

WOWT 6 News has yet to confirm that an offer has been made but we can confirm that McDermott met with Ohio State officials.
