Talking to media in Bhopal, Mr. Singh clarified that his earlier comment was based on the initial report. "Forget getting 1.5 times the cost of inputs as promised by Modi, the farmer is unable to even earn what he was earning so far", he added. "However, I later amended my statement as soon as I received the right information", he said.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, MP Home Minister said that the farmers had died in police firing. This took the form of a blockade where the farmers decided not to allow vegetables and milk to reach the cities with a "let us see how they can manage without us". GOVT BUYING BULLETS FROM KRISHI KALYAN CESS: CPI (M) Are people paying Krishi Kalyan cess so that the government could buy bullets to be shot at farmers, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) asked, as it attacked the Centre over the violent stir by peasants in Madhya Pradesh.
The Shivraj Chouhan government had sought to cool tempers by announcing certain measures, including a loan settlement scheme for those cultivators who had defaulted on repayment of farm loan borrowed by them earlier.
The killing of the farmers came hours after Mandsaur collector Swatantra Kumar Singh claimed all was well in the district and that the situation was under control. Collectors of adjoining Neemuch and Ratlam districts have also been changed.
The relaxation has been made only for women and children upto the age of 10 years in Mandsaur and Pipliamandi, he said.
The police immediately surrounded him and took him into preventive custody.
Protests were also reported from Ujjain, Neemuch and Dewas. The government, however, has hit back at the Congress, alleging that the Congress was politicizing the issue.
Later, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh confirmed that five farmers have been killed in the clashes with the police, which he had vehemently denied before.
He said, from the day one, NDA government is focusing on agriculture and rural development.
RAHUL GANDHI DETAINED Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was detained by police when he tried to force his way into Madhya Pradesh with surging crowds of Congress supporters shouting slogans in praise of the farmer.
Mr Naidu said, the problem in the state arose due to the wrong policies of the previous Congress Government. Now the Maharashtra government said that there will be a biggest loan waiver in the state.
Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Madhya Pradesh's violence-hit Mandsaur district tomorrow to meet the kin of the five persons who were killed in violence during the farmers' agitation. "He (Rahul Gandhi) has been detained". As a senior Kisan Sabha leader said, "this is not a demand oriented struggle, it is a reflection of a deep agrarian crisis that needs a permanent solution".
