In the statement, which he did not read on Thursday, he said that at a January 27 dinner with Trump, just a week after he took office, the president told him "I need loyalty, I expect loyalty". "I hope you can let this go, '" Comey says, according to the prepared remarks.
Even Captain America actor Chris Evans urged the president to tweet.
The White House initially cited Comey's handling of the FBI's investigation of Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham ClintonClinton: Election loss is "devastating, especially considering who I lost to" OPINION: Dems' dreams dashed as Comey testimony clears Trump Twitter reacts to McCain's Comey questions MORE's use of a private email server while secretary of State as the reason for his firing.
Trump Jr. agrees with Risch.
Comey declined to answer a number of questions in a hearing open to the public, and presumably will save many of those answers for the closed session to follow.
Comey says, "Those are the three things he asked, yes sir".
Mr Comey said that he declined to do so in large part because of the "duty to correct" that would be created if that situation changed.
Comey also seemed at a loss as to whether Trump actually has tapes of their conversations, as the President hinted in an apparently threatening tweet last month.
"Although the law required no reason at all to fire an Federal Bureau of Investigation director, the administration then chose to defame me and more importantly the Federal Bureau of Investigation - by saying the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader", Mr. Comey said. He did not direct you to let it go? Comey said that he anxious that Trump's dinner invite was an effort to establish a "patronage" relationship.
Comey says he chose his words carefully when responding to Trump because he was "so stunned" by the conversation.
Comey also testified in his written testimony that Trump, in a unusual private encounter near the grandfather clock in the Oval Office, pushed him to end his investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. He is a good guy.
He said, I hope. Comey was answering questions related to his investigation into Trump's campaign and its alleged ties to Russian Federation.
The biggest bombshell though was his explanation for why he took detailed notes after every meeting with President Trump.
"Again, maybe other people would be stronger in that circumstance, but that is how I conducted myself, I don't know if I will have another opportunity, maybe if I did it again, I would do it better".
