Watch Former FBI Director Comey's Testimony Live Now

He said: "I understood that I could be fired by a president for any reason or for no reason at all. The FBI will be fine without me".

"That's a great question", Comey said.

Here is how you can follow the Comey hearing today in real-time.

"This is not how a President of the United States behaves", he said. I spoke only twice in three years and didn't document it.

Comey believes that his own feelings about the President's comments are largely "irrelevant", the source said, and that his account of what happened is the central issue.

The hearing comes a day after Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and NSA Director Mike Rogers refused to tell the committee if Trump had asked them to intervene with Comey on the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe, as reported, even though they testified that they felt no pressure to do so. During a one-on-one dinner, Trump told him "I need loyalty, I expect loyalty".

"What the president whispered in my ear was, I really look forward to working with you".

Continuing, Comey told the California senator, 'Maybe other people would be strong in that circumstance, but that's how I conducted myself. "My common sense told me, he's looking to get something in exchange".

Burr went on to inquire as to what Trump asked Comey to do in terms of ceasing the investigation into former National Security adviser Michael Flynn. Clinton has blamed Comey's October 28 announcement that he was re-opening the email investigation for her defeat.

In separate press conference Mr Trump disputed this point, Reuters reported.

He was also asked if President Trump tried to stop the Russian Federation investigation, and Comey replied: "not to my understanding, no".

He said his assurance was a "slightly cowardly way" of getting off the phone.

Then he reported the conversation to his team. But, he also added, there is a question of whether the "aggregate pattern of behavior" that culminated in his firing could be seen very differently.

Trump did not directly address Comey's testimony in his remarks, but told supporters "as you know, we're under siege". I was so stunned by the conversation that I just took it in'.

US TV channels cancelled scheduled programmes to air the appearance at 10am Eastern Time (3pm BST) on Thursday - which has been likened to past congressional scandals including Watergate.

Trump Jr. posted repeatedly during the closely watched testimony Thursday, defending his father and attacking Comey. In other words, while each episode could be seen as a "ham-handed misstep", the sum of the actions - capped by the Comey firing - could become something much more serious, especially after the President told NBC that he was thinking of the Russian Federation investigation when he made the decision to dismiss Comey.
