United States governors, mayors, businesses, commit to Paris climate pact goals

Participating cities and states contribute $6.2 trillion to the USA economy, officials said, and include cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Houston.

Climate change activist, Leonardo DiCaprio, has just offered a way to protest President Donald Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the global agreement to fight rising temperatures and support organizations that take the issue very seriously. In addition, Africa is already suffering the effects of warming rates at almost twice the global average.

"He believes the climate is changing and he believes pollutants are part of that equation".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Trump is simply "walking away from what he felt was an agreement that did not serve the American people well".

"Chicago is already 40 percent of the way toward fulfilling the Paris agreement and the goals set".

Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Microsoft Corp. and Facebook Inc. are among dozens of companies that pledged their support for policies combating climate change following President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris accord.

Meanwhile, mayors of more than 85 American cities signed a letter the same day President Trump made his announcement, confirming the commitment of their cities to promoting clean energy and reducing emissions.

Mr Trump announced his decision to pull out of the Paris accord, blaming, among other things, India and China, who he said were benefiting unfairly with billions of dollars.

"All the discussions we had through the last several weeks have been focused on one singular issue: Is Paris good or not for this country?" said Pruitt.

Trump has repeatedly described climate change as a hoax, on one occasion in 2012 saying it was a concept "created by and for the Chinese in order to make USA manufacturing non-competitive".

The signatories to "We Are Still In" say they are "delivering concrete emissions reductions that will help meet America's emissions pledge under the Paris Agreement".

Haley's comments are the closest acknowledgement by an administrative authority since Trump took office that the President -who has called climate change a "hoax" on multiple occasions - believes global warming is occurring and humanity has a role in it. "It's what we'll continue to do", she added.

"Paris or no Paris, our commitment to preserving the climate is for the sake of future generations", Modi said.
