'Mary Poppins Returns' reveals new images of the characters

It's been 50 years since the debut of the Disney classic, and now it's time to bring that character to a new generation with Mary Poppins Returns, due out December of 2018.

"I hope what we're doing, and it certainly feels this way to me, is handsome and profound and will be able to stand alone from the original", the 34-year-old British actress told the magazine. Earlier this year, we got our first look at Emily in costume, complete with the iconic Mary Poppins bag, and now there's another sneak peek that's full of exciting details.

The film will also see the return of the two children she cared from the original film - siblings Jane and Michael Banks (played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw, respectively), now all grown up with children of their own. The world's most beloved nanny is back and we're taking you behind the scenes of the magical sequel with exclusive first look photos!' the caption reads next to one of the snaps.

Set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels), Mary Poppins Returnsis drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers' additional seven books. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep). Thankfully, a familiar nanny is ready to float in and help the family recover their lost spirits.

The images come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, and the first of them shows us Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins, Lin Manuel-Miranda's Jack, and the three children of Ben Whishaw's Michael Banks jumping off the side of a wall and into what's likely to be a wonderful adventure.

As for where the talented Lin-Manuel Miranda fits in, EW reports that he plays Jack, a lamplighter and former apprentice of chimney sweep, Bert (Dick Van Dyke), and I'm eager to see him take center stage in a movie musical (since a Hamilton musical probably won't happen for the next couple decades or so). "He was right here on Cherry Tree Lane and he said, 'I feel like I'm home'". "He was right here on Cherry Tree Lane and he said, 'I feel like I'm home'".
