"We haven't seen everything yet, but based on what they talked about, my guess is that this will address 99% of the needs of professionals", said Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research, in an interview. This beefy iMac Pro comes equipped with up to an 18-core Intel Xeon processor. The Radeon Pro 570 is the base GPU for the new 5K iMac (starting at $1,799), but you can upgrade it to a 575 or 580, and boost the base 8GB of memory and 3.4GHz Core i5 processor to a 4.2GHz Core i7 processor and up to 64GB of memory.
The refreshed iMac line features Kaby Lake CPUs across the board, brighter displays, faster SSD (solid-state drive) storage and graphics improvements that Apple claimed brought a three-times performance improvement to the smaller 21.5-in. systems.
"A tinker-happy user (armed with the right tools and guide) could at least double the base 8 GB of memory, turning their new iMac with Retina Display into an iMac Semi-Pro".
The iMac Pro has also been given a new "space gray" paint job, making it distinct from the traditional silver of the iMac. The Cupertino, Calif. company rarely talks up products that will not shortly reach stores, but has been breaking that tradition of late.
That being the case, the more expensive 15-inch MacBook Pro 2017 is available with 512GB SSD storage and has a $2,799 price tag. The 5K 27-in. display will be powered by a Radeon Pro Vega GPU (graphics processor) with as much as 16GB of memory.
Like the iPad Pro, the 12-inch MacBook lineup has had a polish of its specs, though we'd say there's nothing game-changing.
Apple has also been working on the design of the iPad Pro, and there's a reason that the 9.7-inch model is now obsolete. Rumbles of discontent took hold in online forums, and were amplified by wider reports in the media that questioned Apple's commitment to personal computers. The MacBook Pro which was introduced a year ago got praises for introducing the Touch Bar on top of the keyboard. Some of those iMacs would be designed for the "pro" users at the advanced end of the customer spectrum. And, as expected, new versions of iOS, macOS, wachOS and tvOS were also announced with the line between the Mac and iPad becoming even more blurry. "They've put their cards on the table for this year". However, Apple has not made any official statements yet. So, the lucky old iMac Pro gets two Thunderbolt 3 controllers, as well as a cavalcade of USB and USB-C slots. "To me, that addresses [the critics] as long as they don't slip". Laptops and desktop computers are a different story for Apple, which has copped flak for not offering the industry norm annual updates for its MacBooks, iMacs and Pro machines.
