Notre-Dame cathedral is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris, and visitors typically line up in long queues to enter the building. Collomb said fighting terrorism was the president's "number one" priority. "His colleagues reacted with composure.and fired", Collomb told reporters near the cathedral in central Paris.
In all, the lockdown lasted almost two hours, which she said seemed longer: "I was never so happy to see daylight".
Soderberg told The Associated Press that those inside got nervous when they were told soon after that the cathedral's doors were closing and everyone had to stay there.
Because she speaks both French and English, Soderberg said she was able to understand the French authorities' announcements.
Police swiftly converged on the area, shouting at passersby to stay back.
According to French Interior Minister, Gerard Collomb, the perpetrator was carrying Algerian student identification as well as a selection of kitchen knives when apprehended. The Paris counter-terrorism office has opened an investigation following the incident, the French prosecutor's office said. One officer was slightly injured. The killer was shot to death by other officers. The man was shot in the leg and "neutralized" by police.
Among the several hundred people ordered to remain inside the cathedral was former USA ambassador to the United Nations, Nancy Soderberg.
Hundreds of tourists were deliberately locked inside the cathedral as the incident unfolded.
In February, soldiers providing security at the iconic Louvre museum were attacked by a machete-wielding man. "People were just running", she said.
One of them, Dean Blair, posted on Twitter: "Not the holiday experience wanted".
American tourist Lawrence Langner, 73, told AP that he suddenly heard a commotion and two detonations like gunshots.
Footage shows the man lying prostate outside the French capital landmark as police surround him. Mr Assomia said he couldn't provide the identity of the assailant or details about his physical condition.
Another day, another Islamic terror attack.
The terrorist was immediately shot twice by the officer he wounded; and although he wasn't killed he was brought down in by the gunfire, according to Fox News.
PARIS, FRANCE- Police in Paris shot and injured a man who tried to attack officers with a hammer at the Notre Dame cathedral. A police official from another union confirmed the age of 40. Large numbers of police cars filled the area on the Ile de Cite island in the Seine River in the center of Paris.
In all, more than 230 people have died in attacks claimed by the Islamic State across France in the past 2½ years.
