New York City cabs test ride-sharing for discounted fares

DMV is required to establish complaint procedures for license violations of ridesharing companies.
Drivers no longer have to be registered in the city. They have to pass criminal background checks and a review of their driving records, and must also be at least 19 years old.
"No-one disputes the convenience of the ride-hailing industry", Mr Herrera said. At least 5,000 people in Western New York, for example, have already started applying to drive for Uber.
Dennis Herrera said he wanted to ensure they were complying with local laws on safety, accessibility and not creating "a public nuisance". The NFTA has communicated with both Uber and Lyft, and although there has not been an official agreement, it appears they are close to finalizing a deal to allow the airport to earn a slice of revenue from airport rides.
Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced new regulations for the implementation of ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft across NY. There are now more than 50,000 cars operating through ride-sharing services in the city, and the monthly ridership exceeded 16 million passengers by the end of 2016.
"I think one of the challenges for the ride-hailing services in this area will be the weakness of the cell-phone service here", he said.
Vancouver city councillor Geoff Meggs says that's doubtful because we don't know yet who's in charge in Victoria.
"They are allowing individuals to do business with the public, and those individuals can exclude the public based on any discriminatory elements they want". Bellone touted the economic benefits of the program, saying Suffolk County projects that ride-sharing can generate up to $120 million in additional spending by passengers in the local economy, including $57 million in earnings and an estimated $34 million in time saved.
