Guterres calls for two-state solution for Israel, Palestine

But on the other, the insurgent threat is almost impossible to solve with a decisive military campaign like the Six-Day War.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser had been strongly criticised for his failure to come to the aid of Syria and Jordan. He also dismissed United Nations forces from the Sinai Peninsula (which had been there since the conclusion of the Suez Crisis of 1956).

Such insurgency manifests in different forms, and Israel remains afflicted by near-continuous attacks from entities such as Hamas, Hezbollah, the PLO and various affiliated groups.

"One state for the two peoples means that we are going to lose our majority", said Danny Yatom, a former head of Israel's spy agency, Mossad.

The military conflict began when Israel on June 5 launched a sudden pre-emptive airstrike that destroyed nearly all of the Egyptian air force on the ground.

In the 1967 war, Israel occupied the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and subsequently annexed east Jerusalem, in a move never recognised by the worldwide community. Israel returned the Sinai to Egypt after signing a peace treaty in 1979, formally annexed the Golan Heights in 1981 and withdrew its troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip in 2005.

Palestinian Senior Negotiator Saeb Erekat answered this question and said in an official statement released on Sunday, on the occasion of 50 years of Israeli occupation, that the Palestinian leadership will refuse and fight the Israelis' attempt to impose apartheid through colonial settlement and intensive processes of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment, in anticipation of reaching a political settlement.

The Palestinians seek a future state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with east Jerusalem as its capital.

Israel is called on today by the world community to retreat behind the green line of the pre-1967 border.

"Israel is stubborn and just wants to take the land and the West Bank and kick all the Palestinians out".

In the years that followed, Israel experimented with a new weapon meant to eliminate some of the threats against it.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations responded critically to a call by the United Nations secretary general to end Israeli "occupation" in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.

For example, in November 1966 an Israeli strike on the village of Al-Samū in the Jordanian West Bank left 18 dead and 54 wounded, and during an air battle with Syria in April 1967, the Israeli Air Force shot down six Syrian MiG fighter jets.

But it is instructive to keep in mind that there was no Palestinian state on the West Bank prior to the Six Day War.

There is also the thorny issue of East Jerusalem.

"If it weren't for the occupation, most aid agencies would not need to be here", Oxfam Country Director Chris Eijkemans said in a statement.
